May 5, 2009

After a year of constant innovation, the educational plan continues to be developed and implemented. The classroom projects of the first year are coming to a close, and each grade is preparing a final product for the culmination of its project. These projects involve a lot of extra work on the part of the teachers, and we are grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm.

For its final product, the preschool will give a presentation with Scratch in which a slide show displays numbers that constantly change color. The first and second grades continue to improve their classroom projects. First grade is choosing a classroom game to play with their parents with which they will demonstrate lessons of behavior and interaction they have learned throughout the year. Second grade is using Scratch to create a short movie that shows a seed germinating. Next, they will be painting celebrities with the “Paint” program on their laptops.

The third and fourth grades are creating projects that tell stories related to outer space. These projects culminate a term in which they have studied the solar system and galaxy. The students will compete to present the best projects, and the winners will be displayed in the science lab of the school.

The fifth grade is creating products on Scratch that show cars driving and emitting harmful fumes. These products complement a term in which the students have been learning about pollution and the environment. The students will close this term with a trip in Medellin's metro cable to observe first hand the pollution in various parts of the city.

April, 2009

At the beginning of this month, Luis Fernando Sanchez finalized and implemented his plan for foundation support of the classroom projects. Through many meetings of the foundation team along with the primary teachers, a plan has been developed in which each grade of the primary is accompanied for two hours per week by a member of the foundation who assists in the execution of the project, the maintenance of the laptops, and the evaluation of the activities.

March, 2009

Already absorbed in their material, the students continue to progress and compile information on their subjects. Meanwhile, they are using diverse, creative, tools on their laptops to help them analyze and understand these topics. The following list of tools should give an idea of how diverse and exciting these tools are: Write, Video, Photo, Paint, Calculator, Jigsaw Puzzle, Starchart, Moon and Transit.

Henry Velez, the foundation's director of technology, has begun the Scratch project with the sixth graders. These sixth graders will learn the basics of Scratch and then conduct lessons with the primary students to instruct them in the use of the program. Scratch allows students to create their own short animated presentations. The students of primary will use Scratch to present their final classroom projects.

February, 2009

The students and their teachers are constructing and implementing their classroom projects for the year. This year, each group is looking to develop their own unique project.

The preschool inaugurated its study of water, called “What Would I Do Without You?” with a pool ceremony. The students will use the many programs of the laptops to study the different states of water, its importance in our lives, and its intelligent use in society.

Seeking to internalize and practice basic standards of personal behavior, the first grade inaugurated its project, “Vaccination against Violence,” as well as a classroom project, “Good Behavior Through Games.”

On February 27, the second grade inaugurated its project titled, “The Magnificence of Plants,” with a field trip to the Botanical Garden of Medellin.

The third and fourth grades decided to study the solar system and galaxy, and began their projects with a video projection of a documentary about outer space and the consequences of pollution on earth for our solar system.

The fifth grade inaugurated its project, “Cars and the Ecosystem,” in an urban neighborhood near the school. The project will explore the ways in which cars pollute and damage our environment, and look specifically at the degree of pollution that exists in Medellin.
