Educational Committee

Members of the Marina Orth Foundation, educators from North Catholic University, and teachers of the Marina Orth primary school were all involved in the following project: VUELA (Taking Flight) – OLPC. Everyone involved in this project realized that the VUELA (Taking Flight) project would not only bring a laptop to every child in the school but would also constitute the beginning of a new and improved education for these children. The educational plan that was constructed by these three groups now guides the educational experience of every child in the primary school at the Marina Orth School. As part of this plan, the children in Aguas Frias have had access to new technology that has transformed the content and quality of their learning. In order to develop the Project VUELA (Taking Flight), it was necessary that the teachers, students and all other participants were prepared, with the teachers’ preparation being the most central part of the development of the program. In order to achieve great things in this initiative, we have been relying on a strong partnership between the different groups involved. According to an agreement in the middle of 2008, North Catholic University offered its professional support with the construction of an educational plan in addition to its help with other diverse initiatives.

With the Project VUELA (Taking Flight) developing, North Catholic University assumed the role of strengthening the teachers’ knowledge of using computers and the internet in the classroom. Throughout the second semester of 2008, the teachers received training for the use of these virtual tools in a dynamic online course that was followed weekly with a face-to-face meeting. Students and teachers with their laptops can now engage in an interactive learning process both in the classroom as well as outside of it.
