Connection to the World

Campaign for the appropriate use of the internet: Take care of me… I’ll take care of you

General objective
To guarantee long-term understanding in the school community of the educational possibilities offered by the internet in the context of Project TAKING FLIGHT.

Specific objectives
• To optimize and standardize the use of the internet and the network.

• To present to the community all of the educational possibilities that this tool offers.

• To reinforce understanding of the internet.

• To develop permanent workshops for the “E-toys” and “Scratch” programs that allow teachers to accompany students in the creation of advanced products.

• To maintain the availability of virtual tools necessary for the achievement of these projects.

• To continue developing the weekly consulting space where the teachers can not only evaluate their projects, but also reprogram and improve them.

Methodology
Educating is not easy work, and when it involves material that the parents and teachers are not even familiar with, it is even more complicated. It is possible that some parents are afraid because they don’t understand modern technology or think that they can’t help their students in this type of education. Nonetheless, just as it is not necessary to have a driver’s license to teach kids to walk on the sidewalk and cross the street, it’s also not necessary to be an expert in technology to teach a student to use these tools. Common sense is enough to solve most problems found in this field, and in many cases, enough to develop confident use of technology.

For the Classroom Projects
• Weekly group meetings. • Classroom visits and personalized consulting by the K12 Wired Foundation. Permanent personalized courses. • Logistical classroom support from volunteer students. • Education of students in the use of the tools for these projects.

For the use of the internet in the Classroom Projects
For the use of the internet in the Classroom Projects:

In this campaign we will use the analogy: surf the internet – walk through the neighborhood. This is meant to simplify the use of the internet by comparing websites to places in the neighborhood in terms of areas, times, characters, dangers, places to visit, advantages, and special locations (stores, homes, parks, bus terminals, etc.). With this analogy, we hope to teach the children safe use of the internet by building upon what they already know in terms of safe conduct in the neighborhood.

The slogan of the campaign is: TAKE CARE OF ME… I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU

Process of Sensitization and Education for Parents, Students, and Teachers This process will be developed starting with three workshops that will deal with the following topics:

SESSION 1: School and Community Network What is a network? What does it do? How does it work? Let’s talk about our school and community network

SESSION 2: The wonder of the Internet What is it? How is it used? What about the mesh network of the XO laptops? Precautions when surfing (standards) Search engines most used in the school (search engines for children and adolescents) The internet and study (TIC’s)

SESSION 3: Creating an email account What is email? What is it for? I communicate efficiently Let’s create an email account

Note: The training sessions with the teachers of the Primary that are part of Project Taking Flight will take place in schedules agreed on by the teachers.

Principles for the good use of the internet

1. It is necessary to teach the children that there are people out there set on hurting them or tricking them, and to teach them how to protect themselves. 2. That what they publish on the web has consequences and reaches much farther than they can imagine, and that they should be responsible for the information that they communicate. 3. The web is not only a place for consuming information, but also a place for creation and expression, and we need to learn to be responsible for our contributions. 4. That there is information that should be analyzed thoroughly and critically, that we should corroborate information, put it in context, and identify sources. 5. “The role of the parents is fundamental. It is not only lawful for us to control what our children do with the computer, but also the healthy exercise of responsible parenthood. I look over the sites my kids look at.”
